The Top States for Solar in 2020 Part 3

Solar panel installations have been thriving throughout the past few years, but in 2019 it beat almost all of the records previously set in the United States. Some of the states have done more to help break the records, others have had their fair share struggles.

In parts 1 & 2 we discussed states ranked 1-8 for solar power, next up is going to be 9-12.

#9 Georgia

Georgia is not short on sunshine. Solar panels seem to be a no brainer in the state.

Solar in Georgia has fallen a little since 2019. The state went from being ranked 5th, to the 9th ranking. Currently, the state has 1,901 solar panel installations, and the Peach state currently gets 1.91% of its electricity from solar power. The state has currently invested $3,186.48 million in solar power. There is currently 2,659.01 MW of solar power installed in Georgia, which will be enough to provide power for 304,759 homes. The solar power industry has created 4,798 solar jobs in the state, there are currently 196 solar companies in the state, 72 of which are solar installers/developers. It is predicted that in the next 5 years Georgia will add 1,766 MW of solar power, predicting that the state will fall to the 11th ranking.

This state, like any other state, has quite a few notable solar panel installations. One of them being the Butler Solar Farm 20 in Butler, is 20 MW and is among the largest solar panel installations in the state. The photovoltaic solar panel installation has enough electric capacity to provide power from over 2,263 homes.

#10 New York

The Big Apple is no stranger to lights. The lights in the city need a lot of power to keep them lit all hours of the night, and the City That Never Sleeps can rely on solar power to keep the lights on.

Solar in New York has struggled a bit, dropping from 8th to the 10th slot. Currently, the state 131,696 solar panel installations and New York gets 1.97% of its electricity from solar power. The state has invested $5,852.56 million in solar power. Currently, there is 2,311.15 MW of solar power installed in New York, which is enough to provide solar power to 397,809 homes. The solar power industry has created 10,740 solar jobs in the state, there are currently 713 solar companies in the state, 246 of which are solar installers/developers. It is predicted in the next 5 years the state will add 4,117 MW of solar power, moving the Big Apple to the 5th ranking.

One of the more notable solar panel installations in New York is going to be the Long Island Solar Farm was completed in 2011 by developer BP Solar. The photovoltaic solar panel installation can generate 32 MW of solar power, which is going to be enough to provide power for over 5,265 homes in New York.

#11 Utah

Utah is known for having some of the best snow and slopes in the nation. They have gorgeous national parks, and they are thriving in the solar power department.

Solar in Utah had a great year, moving from the 20th ranking up to the 11th. Currently, Utah has 39,524 solar panel installations, and the state currently gets 7.09% of its electricity from solar power. The state has invested $2,853.30 million in solar power. Currently, there is 1,786.12 MW of solar power, which is enough to provide solar power to 354,179 Utah homes. The solar power industry has created 7,107 jobs in the state. There are currently 114 solar companies in the state, 55 of which are solar installers/developers. It is predicted that in the next 5 years Utah will add 1.456 of solar power, predicting that it will fall to the 16th ranking.

One of the more notable solar panel installations in Utah is the Utah Red Hills Renewable Energy Park, which was completed in 2016. This photovoltaic solar panel installation can generate 104 MW of solar power, which is enough to provide power for more than 20,419 Utah homes.

#12 Colorado

Utah’s neighbor, Colorado, also has some amazing snow and slopes. Travelers come from all over to see some of the sights of Colorado.

Utah’s neighbor also had quite the year regarding solar power as well. Colorado moved from the 14th slot to the 12th slot. Currently, Colorado has 68,715 solar panel installations, and the state gets 3.33% of its electricity from solar power. The state has invested $3,735.83 million in solar power. Currently, there is 1,490.36 MW of solar power, which is enough to provide 301,129 homes with solar power in Colorado. The solar power industry has created 7,174 jobs in the state. There are currently 378 solar companies in the state, 191 of which are solar installers/developers. In the next 5 years, it is projected that the state will add 3,001 MW of solar power in the next 5 years, predicting that it will move into the 8th ranking.

One of the more notable solar panel installations is the Hooper Solar project. This project has 50 MW of solar power in San Luis Valley is one of the largest solar panel installations in Colorado. This solar panel installation is going to have enough electric capacity to provide 10,034 homes with solar power.
