Solar Energy's Celebrity Status

Jessica PirroNovember 15, 2019 2185 0

Solar-powered systems have grown exponentially more popular in the past decade, and nations across the globe are installing solar panels. Many factors have contributed to the increase in solar panel installations, but one that oftentimes gets overlooked is the influence that movies and celebrities have when it comes to solar energy.

Celebrities and Solar Power

There are a lot of popular celebrities that are influencing energy production and have been very vocal about the environmental benefits of solar energy, climate change and ways that we can improve our carbon footprint. But there are some Hollywood All-Stars who have become solar energy MVP’s. These celebrities have adopted solar energy and aren’t just endorsing the environmental benefits of solar energy, they are practicing what they preach and installing their solar-powered system for their energy needs.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leo is more than every 90s girl's childhood celebrity crush. He’s also a huge advocate for solar energy and is known to endorse all of the environmental benefits of solar energy. He also speaks out against all of the pollutants that are coming from fossil fuels.

In 1998, DiCaprio decided that his heart couldn’t go on any longer without taking a stand for what he was passionate about, which is when he started an environmental foundation. But he wasn’t going to stop there, a large portion of the movie inception was powered with solar energy. The Hollywood heartthrob took it one step further and in 2008, and joined the board of advisors for the solar company Kingo.

Pierce Brosnan

Mama Mia, here he goes again, my my, how can we resist him? Pierce Brosnan has a way of working his way into our hearts on and off the screen. He is a huge advocate for sources of renewable energy, especially solar panels. The actor who once played James Bond has a solar panel installation on his Los Angeles rooftop. His solar-powered system generates enough solar electricity for him to use solar energy for his household needs, and still has excess solar energy to sell back to the grid. In addition to a solar panel installation, the Laws of Attraction actor also has a solar-powered system for the compost heap. The well-known actor has also incorporated other sources of renewable energy to his property. To make his home even more environmentally-friendly, he added a water recycling system and insulated windows. The actor has even programmed his home to turn off the lights if a room has been vacant for longer than five minutes. Brosnan has gone above and beyond to ensure that his home doesn’t emit any more carbon emissions than necessary.

Tom Hanks

Hanks is a fan favorite. Regardless if you liked him in Cast Away, A League of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, Cast Away, Catch Me If You Can, The Polar Express, Saving Mr. Banks, or Toy Story 1,2,3, or 4, chances are you have heard of the star. Along with switching from a traditional car to an electric car, Hanks is also an advocate for switching from fossil fuels to solar electricity. Hanks has signed up for the Solar Neighbors Program and plans on continuing to fight for sources of renewable energy to replace traditional fossil fuel energy.

Alicia Silverstone

Alicia isn’t clueless when it comes to the environmental benefits of solar energy. The iconic actress has said “ugh, as off” when it comes to getting power from the grid. Silverstone is known as an environmental spokesperson, and she has taken a stand against fossil fuels by getting a solar panel installation on top of her Los Angeles rooftop. Silverstone is always looking for ways to not only reduce her carbon footprint but to encourage those around her to do the same as well. Silverstone has encouraged building developers to consider getting a solar panel installation on new developments this way they can reduce their bills while helping the environment.

Rachel McAdams

She may not have been an advocate for the word ‘fetch’ during her stint as Regina George in Mean Girls, but she is an advocate for solar energy. Other than Mean Girls, McAdams is known for her roles in The Wedding Crashers, The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Vow, Southpaw, and most importantly the Notebook, but she could also be known for going above and beyond to reduce her carbon footprint. She unplugs her unused appliances, drives an electric car and powers her home with solar energy.

Movies and Solar Energy

After hearing about the celebrities that are advocating for solar power, we can’t help get even more excited when we hear about all of the major motion pictures that feature solar panels.

Spider-Man 2

We know what you’re thinking, which Spider-Man 2, the one with Tobey Macguire, Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland? (Unless you are an avid marvel fan and know the different names if that is the case we applaud you). But for those of us who aren’t that dedicated, it is the Spider-Man 2 that was made back in 2004 with Tobey Macguire.

In the scene that features solar energy, we see Doctor Otto Octavius (Dr. Octopus) hold a demonstration of a fusion reactor. He handles the reactor’s core with the help of robotic arms, and he comments “he has the power of the sun in the palm of his hands.” Giving us a better visual of what solar power looks like.

The Martian

The Martian doesn’t only feature environmental advocate Matt Damon, but it also features solar-powered systems. Because Mars is lacking gas stations, wind, or power plants, the astronauts have to rely on solar energy to get places. The Hermes spacecraft in the Martian uses solar panels for power, and Mark Watney has to rely on solar panels in unconventional ways to survive on Mars.

In the Martian, there is also a field of solar panels that are installed nearby one of the research labs. No, the movie is not based on a true story, but the way that they use solar panels to collect sunlight and convert it into solar electricity is true.

Another cool thing that happens in The Martian is, Matt Damon’s character, Mark Watney, is seen going outside and cleaning off the solar panel installation. By keeping the solar-powered systems dirt-free, Watney is ensuring that his solar-powered systems are going to be as efficient as possible. If there’s dirt covering the solar panels it hinders the solar electricity production. Shortly after Watney cleans off the solar panels he can communicate with NASA.

Watney also drives his own solar power dune buggy. We see when Watney has to leave one area of Mars to go to another, he packs up his solar panels and takes them with him. He then uses his solar panels to recharge the automobile while he naps.
