Should You Install 60-Cell or 72-Cell Solar Panels?

Should You Install 60-Cell or 72-Cell Solar Panels?

When choosing which panel is right for you, it’s important to know the basics of solar panels. However, oftentimes people find themselves not well-informed enough to make the appropriate decision. The difference between a 60-Cell and 72-Cell panel is one of those times. Many people are under the impression that a 72-Cell panel is just for commercial use and can’t be installed onto someone’s private home. Not only is this not true, but the difference between the two types of panels is a lot more simple than people are led to believe. A 72-Cell panel is 12 inches taller and, in turn, contains 12 more solar cells. That’s it. Let’s dive a little deeper into this common myth and figure out which panel is right for you.

72-Cell Panels are Just Fine for Residential Use

Many people are under the impression that 72-Cell panels are only used for commercial use. This may be because commercial buildings tend to choose 72-Cell panels due to the fact that they need less racking, less electrical connections, and fewer clamps. They are much cheaper to install on something large like a commercial building due to the savings of needing less equipment to install them.

However, if you live in a residential home, you can also install them and get the exact same perks from doing so. Not only is it possible, but 50% of residential homes already have 72-Cell solar panels installed, putting that theory right into practice.

Ease of Installation

If you’re considering investing in 72-Cell solar panels, you may also be worried that it will be harder to install, which could, in turn, drive up installation costs. While it’s true that these panels are larger and weigh more, that doesn’t mean it requires more time or money to move them and install them. It already takes two people to move a panel, regardless, so it’s not actually that much of a difference.

The main difference is in the fact that installing 72-Cell solar panels are actually quicker to install. This could mean the installation costs will be cheaper overall.

You also don’t need to buy any special, stronger racking, because racking systems for solar panels are universal. While you’ll be using the same racking system, you’ll also use less of it, making it even cheaper.

How Do I Know If 72-Cell Panels Are Right for Me?

The main thing you should focus on is the cost-per-watt when deciding between the two panels. Figure out which panel will give you more, which will help you figure out which panel is actually worth more.

You’ll also have to factor in how much space you actually have. If your roof is too small for the 72-Cell panels, (such as having a mounting space that’s only 35 feet wide and 6 feet tall) you wouldn’t have a choice but to install the 60-Cell panels.

Can I Mix Both Types of Panels Together?

If you have a mounting space that has enough room for just one row of 72-Cell panels, you would be able to install those and then place 60-Cell panels around them. However, you’ll want to make sure you consult with a designer to make sure nothing gets damaged in the process, as it is more complicated than just installing panels that are all the same.

When choosing which type of panel is right for you, the choice is yours. When installing the panels, you may have more questions. Check out the HahaSmart blog to learn more.
